What is wellness coaching?

Wellness coaches help clients make positive and lasting changes to their health. The coach guides clients through the process of creating a vision for their health and well-being, developing a healthy mindset and healthy habits, and encouraging them every step of the way until they accomplish their goals.

How does a Wellness Coach help?
Coaching is about having an accountability partner who will support and encourage you even when you feel ready to quit. A coach provides support and inspiration to continue moving forward, even if you are dealing with a health-related issue.
No matter what health conditions or ailments you may have, a health coach encourages clients to recognize that living a thriving life is about making healthy choices that positively impact their mental, physical, and emotional health.
Unlike a nutritionist or physical therapist, who makes specific diet and exercise suggestions, a wellness coach will help you make better general choices that fit your lifestyle.
Now that you have a better understanding of what a wellness coach does, and are ready to make healthy changes to your lifestyle, here are a some of the areas a wellness coach could be beneficial for you to work with:
  • Committing to health related goals
  • Maintaining a calm positive mindset
  • Increasing energy and motivation
  • Nutrition for:
    • Weight loss
    • Hormonal Imbalance

What should I look for in a Life or Wellness Coach?
Since you will be spending a lot of one on one time with a coach it is important to find a good match. You should be comfortable sharing your life's vision with her/him and you should feel strongly that they will help you achieve that vision.
In addition, look for a professionally trained coach with certification from ICF (International Coach Federation )or ICHWC (International Consortium for Health and Wellness Coaching). Coaches who studied in International Coach Federation approved programs get training and mentoring. The ICF also sets professional standards for coaches but the industry doesn’t yet have regulations. That means anyone can call him or herself a life/wellness coach without certification, real training or experience.
**Before you sign on for any coaching sessions, interview a few potential life or wellness coaches. Ask how they usually work with clients. A life or wellness coach is usually not a licensed healthcare professional, and their services probably won’t be covered by health insurance.
In addition, a wellness coach is not necessarily a nutritionist, dietitian, or personal trainer. While they may be knowledgeable in these areas, they might not be qualified to offer you nutritional or fitness advice. A coach is also different from a psychotherapist, who is a mental health care professional with training in medicine, psychology, nursing, or social work. If you think that depression, anxiety, or other mental health problems may be getting in the way of realizing your goals, then you may want to talk with a licensed mental health professional before you hire a coach.
How do I work with a Coach?
First, you'll sit down with your life coach or wellness coach over the phone or in person. The sessions will range from 15 minutes to an hour. During that time you'll talk about what you want to accomplish.
Through the questions your coach asks, together you'll define your goals and the challenges that could stand in your way. Then you'll outline the steps you'll need to take to achieve those goals.
